500km: Brazeau Reservoir

July 4th 2024

Distance: 5km Elevation: Minimal

Brazeau Reservoir is 3:10 minute drive from Calgary. It is a 40 minute drive from Drayton Valley. The campground is both secluded and quiet. The dam and river are popular for fisherman and boaters. We just enjoyed walking by the reservoir, sitting by the river and playing camping games.

Walking along the reservoir

The Trailhead

From Calgary there are a few ways to get to get there. We took Highway 2 to Highway 11. From Rocky Mountain House drive west towards Nordegg. Turn north on the Sunchild Road. There are limited services, so stop in Rocky for anything. You will see a sign on the left for the Brazeau Dam Recreational Area. Turn left. Park at the boat launch.

The Hike

We walked along the shore of the reservoir which was a decent length. The reservoir is mainly walking in sand which can be strenuous but was very windy and cool. It would be a nice place to swim if it was warmer. The water is freezing. We walked back on the road through the campground.

Side Notes

  • The campground is a mix between reserve on line and first come first served.
  • There are hook-ups available at one side of the campground.
  • The more private sites are on the river side.
  • We saw some people crown camping nearby.
  • Drayton Valley has many services such as Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire.

Unfortunately, no pictures were to be seen in my notebook. What a pity.
