500km: Jumping Pound Summit

June 25th 2024

Distance: 6.3km Elevation: 407m

This hike is 1 hour 20 minute drive from Calgary. It is short and sweet and makes a good before/after work hike. The hike is not steep and I would say is suitable for children. The road is gravel and can be rough,it road is closed December-May. However it is dry early making it a good shoulder season hike. This hike has a lot of wildflowers in June and July.

View west from summit.

The Trailhead

From Calgary head to Highway 1 turn off on the exit for Highway 68. The road will turn to gravel. Turn left onto the Powderface Trail. Follow until you crest a hill. There will be a turnout on the right with a map sign on the left marking the trailhead.

View of the Highway 66 valley.

The hike

The hike starts in the forest, it is a gentle up with some switchbacks. The path is well beaten and wide, not very technical. You soon reach the top of the hill and a T intersection, turn left. Following the ridge. You leave the trees and are now on a wide open area. There are many flowers in this meadow. Head up the hill. Once you reach the summit you can see Calgary, Moose Mountain and other mountains in the Bragg creek area.

Wildflowers near the summit.

Side Notes

  • This hike is down a gravel road with logging trucks, be aware.
  • There is no cell service. The 68 also does not have services.
  • There are many helicopters landing at the summit, be careful.
  • This is a good hike for kids, and wild flowers.
  • The road is closed December-May, so it is not a winter hike.
