500km: Plateau Mountain

June 15th 2024

Distance: 20km Elevation: 426m

Plateau Mountain is one of my favorite hikes we did this year. This hike is a 2 hour drive from Calgary. Plateau is not steep and ends on a flat mountain top. You have excellent views of the mountains and the flat mountain spans for kilometers. The rocks and flowers are very different and makes you feel like you are on another planet. Tucked away in PLUZ land there are not many people you will meet on this trail.

The Trailhead

From Calgary make your way to Longview. Drive past long view following Highway 22 south. At Highway 532 turn right. The road will now be gravel. The road will eventually climb up a hill, it can be a little scary with a big cliff drop on your left but as long as you have a good car you will be fine. At the top of the mountain there is a pullout that has a nice view. Continue down the mountain until you reach a T intersection, turn right. At “Plateau Mountain” road turn right and park by the gate, out of the way.

The Hike

The entire hike until you are at the top is on a road, making for easy hiking. The road is also not steep just long. The first bit you are in the trees but you start getting views quickly. You soon reach the first flat bit of the mountain which is very cool, continue up to the next plateau. You can hike all around the top of the mountain and I read there is even an ice cave. However we just stopped for lunch as we saw some dark clouds and headed down.

Side Notes

  • This hike is on not popular roads, with no cell service.
  • Longview has an amazing Jerky Shop to stop at.
  • There appears to be natural gas wells at the top, do not block the road and be mindful of vehicles.
  • The gravel road isn’t terrible but it can have potholes.
