The 500km: Ravens End

April 28th 2024

Distance: 9.3km Elevation:766m

The “ravens end” hike is an official trail to the top of the hill prior to climbing the backside of Mount Yamunuska. Being mainly in the trees with a few viewpoints it is a good option for shoulder season, winter, after work or hiking with kids.

The Trailhead

From Calgary you can take Highway 1 or Highway 1A. Taking Highway 1 turn right at signs for Bow Valley campground, follow signs for Yamunuska trailhead, turn left. The parking lot has toilets an garbage’s.

The Hike

This is an official trail so the trail is very nice. Starting out through the flat forest you then approach the hill. The trial climbs and can be steep at time. There are open places to lookout at the valley below. You will then enter the trees where it is steady up again, when we came there was snow. Microspikes and poles were useful here. You then arrive to the top of Ravens End. There is a sign here, and you can see where the Mount Yamunska trail then begins. From the top you there are a lot of trees but you can find spots to lookout at the valley below, but also we the mountains behind Yamunuska.

Side Notes

  • Ravens End has a lot of trees making it a good winter hike with poles and microspikes. I have never done Yamunuska but I have heard it is not recommended in winter due to the cliff section.
  • This hike is in Kananaskis and requires a Kananaskis pass, you can buy online.
  • I have heard of many car break in’s here, everywhere has the possibility but something to keep in mind.
  • It can be very windy in this valley, plan accordingly.
